Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen: Between Assumptions and Antecedents

By Abdul Mutallib Muktar

Many people have continued to oppose the endorsement of Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen as a speaker of the Green Chambers without presenting adequately valid reasons. Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen is so much opposed on no ground other than “he’s not known, he’s not popular, he is weak”. People who keep commenting that he is not known or popular have unfortunately failed to find a way of knowing him, his rich curriculum vitae, antecedents and pedigree. The reservedness, tolerance, diplomacy and peacefulness that define the personality of Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen have been misunderstood to be a weakness.

The victory of any government is not all about winning election in all or most of the key offices provided by a political system. Winning election, therefore, is not the end, nor the beginning of the end, but an end to a particular beginning.

Being the victorious party in presidential election and the winner of the majority seats in the National Assembly, APC must clear the path for delivering its mandate. In a presidential system of government, collective responsibility is a pillar. A government that is constituted with lethargic National Assembly will have nothing to write home about. And the blame will, substantially, fall on the president.

One of the ways forward is to ensure that the right people occupy the key offices in the National Assembly. After broad consultation and deep deliberations, the president-elect, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, endorsed Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen. The president-elect is too experienced  and competent to be pulled into the mud. He knows the pain of having a House of Representatives that will constitute a clog in the wheel of his administration.

Talking about zoning, the North West cast 2,652,824 votes to APC despite the obvious fact that Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima are not from the zone. Tinubu got 30 percent of his total votes from the zone. This heavily proves the loyalty of the zone to the party and its candidates. Throwing the speakership to the zone, therefore, has shown that Tinubu and his advisers thoroughly believe in a reward system that encourages hard work, loyalty and development.

Endorsing a speaker from the North West is also a task to be meticulously carried out, giving consideration to a number of qualities. Most importantly, it is the antecedents of all the candidates vying for the speakership position from the zone that will be a fundamental consideration. Who has a record of sponsoring the highest number of bills? Who delivered in his constituency? Who is competent, tolerant, reserved, diplomatic and, based on his orientation, has the ability to keep and promote unity in diversity at the Green Chambers?

One person whom objectivity and meritocracy will favour amongst the candidates from the North West is Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen. His antecedents speak loudly about him, and this is what should be seen capturing the attention of people rather than politically-inspired assumptions.

Long May You Reign

Abdul Mutallib Muktar abdulmutallib.muktar@gmail.com The very time you were born into this world, no one foresaw who you would become in the future. But on your palm appeared bold letters stating that you would rule the emirate of Zazzau in 2020 to a period only time can tell; it is just that human eyes could not see. Until today that it finally happened, we would not have known what was on your palm when you came to the world. It is with the hands of faith we accept you as the fate of Zazzau. Long may you reign, Your Royal Highness. A gentleman like you with a mountain of experience deserves the turban and that is the reason we hear varieties of tambourine drums coming from different places celebrating you as the successor to the late Shehu Idris of blessed memory (May his soul rest in peace). The space of social media is filled up with good wishes and prayers for you as the man currently sitting on the throne after weeks of expectation and prayers. Your Higness, in you I see the r...

A Century Without an Emir from Mallawa Dynasty

Mallam Musa Bamalli, a warrior, an Islamic scholar was a flag bearer for Usman Dan Fodio  who was sent to the old Hausa kingdom of Zazzau. Musa defeated the then Hausa emir in 1808 and turned the kingdom into an emirate under the caliphateship of Dan Fodio. The warrior continued to rule Zazzau until his demise in 1821. He was the founding father of the Mallawa dynasty that happened to be one of the four ruling houses in Zazzau. (The other three dynasties are: Barebari, Katsinawa, Sullubawa). Since the death of Mal. Musa, only a very few times his descendants ruled Zazzau and it is over a century now without an emir from his progeny. It is not surprising that since the death of the late Emir Shehu Idris (May his soul repose in peace), the people of Zazzau have been so agog of knowing the succeeding emir while everyone has in mind their contender whom they pray for. One of the four major contenders is the son of Mallawa, a great grandson of Mallam Musa Bamalli, the Magajin Garin Zazz...

INAUGURAL SPEECH BY THE PRESIDENT OF COURT OF APPEAL, AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY SRC-COURT

Waking up in the early hours of Monday, preoccupied by the thought of my inaugural speech, came to me with great astonishment. The announcement of my swearing-in as the President, Court of Appeal, ABU Judiciary, sounded to me like a fairy tale. This remarkable step in my journey at the Faculty of Law, ABU, Zaria would not have materialised without the approval of the Lord of their lordships, the Creator of the universe. To Him be the glory! The copacetic effort of the Council of Principal Partners, Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, must not go unappreciated for an impressive display of expertise, resilience and wisdom from the period of rigorous screening to the period of a colourful inauguration. This milestone would not have been reached without the supervision of our dogged, patient and supportive lecturers. Thank you immensely. I am using this medium to offer my sincere congratulations to the newly appointed Chief Justice of ABU SRC-Court, Justices of Supreme Court, Justices...
