Nigerians have always been indifferent to some happenings in the country because they believe that displaying their concern changes nothing. But as can be observed from parents and students across the country, there is too much outcry for reopening of schools after several months of closure as a result of COVID-19.
While hope began to mount for reopening the schools when some states governments fixed date for resumption, the recent statement from the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu demoralised Nigerians because such statement is a signal that schools will not reopen and WAEC exams too will not hold this year in the country. This, respectfully, is a rash decision putting in mind the fate of education in Nigeria and the legion contradictions here and there about the virus. One academic year is about to be wasted because of an unstrategic handling of the sector.
The reason adduced by the Honourable Minister for not reopening the schools is to protect the pupils and students from COVID-19. Many Nigerians question and beg for the reason the education sector remains shutdown when all the sectors are working properly across the country. Is it that those sectors are immune from the virus?
Markets in Nigeria are so congested every day disregarding the social distancing order. Banks too at the entrance are so congested disregarding the social distancing order, motor parks pay no attention to anything called social distancing; mosques and churches are congested too but no report of spread of the virus amongst those people. These places have been running effectively without been ordered to shutdown. Why the education of the poor Nigerians? What of the fund budgeted for 2020 education?
Countries that were hit hard by the virus, because of the so much value they attached to education, have reopened their schools. It has been said and still maintained that Nigeria is honoured by Almighty God for protecting the country against a bush-fire-like spread of the virus. If safety measures can be enforced on educational institutions, it is okay then. Nigerians too are human beings.
The Federal Government should critically think of the consequences of not reopening schools sooner than later. What is more dangerous is endangering the education of Nigerians because few people believe that their children will contract the virus in schools. It is not that the virus does not exist here, but God has honoured the country to the extent that it is hard for one to point one who has the virus.
