Northern Nigerian Youths: Our Asset Or Liability?

https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/northern-youths-assets-or-liability.html

It is worrisome and very unfortunate that our beloved society that should be producing greater number of productive and serious-minded people is continuesly turning into a kind of society that produces troublesome and irresponsible youths who become nuisance to the lives of the entire people of the society. I wonder why this is so much common in the north, and deteriorating by every second as it remains unchecked and uncontrolled. It seems there is collapse of social institutions.

One everyday hears of youths who fight themselves fiercely and madly - by extension, they kill themselves or cause serious injury - mostly under the influence of deadly drug abuse which they made themselves addicted to. Most times, these youths start their fight from  parties over stupid girlfriends or some flimsy reasons. On most occasions, during this outrageous acts which I vehemently condemn with all sincerity, the innocent becomes the victim. At times, girls are also found in this detestable drug abuse; it is believed they are more affected these days.

It is generally or viewed by majority as resulting from unemployment and chronic illiteracy. Of course, this is one reason out of many; an idle mind is a devil's workshop. Passing through numerous streets, one finds youths sitting as if they are watchmen - neither going to school nor going to any business but devilishly planning crook and dubious means to get money; this, no doubt, results in theft, robbery e.t.c. It is well known that satanically influenced politicians easily buy the hearts of such youths and order them to trigger mayhem, unrest, chaos and killings.

Again, I shall irrefutably be right to say, our parents are soft, reckless and uncaring. By extension, our family institution is to a large extent very dormant. This immensely contribute to unruliness of children. It bothers me how a lot of parents show immeasurable love and  affection to their offsprings disregarding drawing a line of discipline and control as mechanism to shape and bring them onto the path of righteousness. It is really sad!

Moreover, our security personnel are as lifeless as not existing. They don't perform their duty critically, seriously and in accordance with the dictates of their profession. I therefore urge them, particularly the N.D.L.E.A and Police Force to be very active as they bring social control from different angles. I must also externalise the content of my heart concerning the Vigilante (yan banga), they can do so very much in tackling these problems; our society should give them maximum support and cooperation.

Our institutions are like organs of the body as says by the Structural-Functionalism; they work together to perform every task. So, all these institutions: family, religious, political, educational e.t.c. should rise to the occasion; allowing any of the institutions in doldrums will negatively affect the entire institutions. Individuals too, especially the elderly should put hands on deck. Government should make education affordable to the financial ability of the masses and create employment for teeming youths who are going berserk at the state of this heightening unemployment.

Finally, it shall be my immense pleasure if this article reaches my targeted audience and even others who can offer helping hands to sanitize our already cramped society. Let's say no to drug abuse, thuggery, hooliganism, illiteracy, unemployment, indiscipline and laxity of our parents, government and security personnel in discharging their most needed duties. Our youths are said to be our asset, but if left untrained and uncared for, must surely be our liability.

Long May You Reign

Abdul Mutallib Muktar abdulmutallib.muktar@gmail.com The very time you were born into this world, no one foresaw who you would become in the future. But on your palm appeared bold letters stating that you would rule the emirate of Zazzau in 2020 to a period only time can tell; it is just that human eyes could not see. Until today that it finally happened, we would not have known what was on your palm when you came to the world. It is with the hands of faith we accept you as the fate of Zazzau. Long may you reign, Your Royal Highness. A gentleman like you with a mountain of experience deserves the turban and that is the reason we hear varieties of tambourine drums coming from different places celebrating you as the successor to the late Shehu Idris of blessed memory (May his soul rest in peace). The space of social media is filled up with good wishes and prayers for you as the man currently sitting on the throne after weeks of expectation and prayers. Your Higness, in you I see the r...

A Century Without an Emir from Mallawa Dynasty

Mallam Musa Bamalli, a warrior, an Islamic scholar was a flag bearer for Usman Dan Fodio  who was sent to the old Hausa kingdom of Zazzau. Musa defeated the then Hausa emir in 1808 and turned the kingdom into an emirate under the caliphateship of Dan Fodio. The warrior continued to rule Zazzau until his demise in 1821. He was the founding father of the Mallawa dynasty that happened to be one of the four ruling houses in Zazzau. (The other three dynasties are: Barebari, Katsinawa, Sullubawa). Since the death of Mal. Musa, only a very few times his descendants ruled Zazzau and it is over a century now without an emir from his progeny. It is not surprising that since the death of the late Emir Shehu Idris (May his soul repose in peace), the people of Zazzau have been so agog of knowing the succeeding emir while everyone has in mind their contender whom they pray for. One of the four major contenders is the son of Mallawa, a great grandson of Mallam Musa Bamalli, the Magajin Garin Zazz...

INAUGURAL SPEECH BY THE PRESIDENT OF COURT OF APPEAL, AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY SRC-COURT

Waking up in the early hours of Monday, preoccupied by the thought of my inaugural speech, came to me with great astonishment. The announcement of my swearing-in as the President, Court of Appeal, ABU Judiciary, sounded to me like a fairy tale. This remarkable step in my journey at the Faculty of Law, ABU, Zaria would not have materialised without the approval of the Lord of their lordships, the Creator of the universe. To Him be the glory! The copacetic effort of the Council of Principal Partners, Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, must not go unappreciated for an impressive display of expertise, resilience and wisdom from the period of rigorous screening to the period of a colourful inauguration. This milestone would not have been reached without the supervision of our dogged, patient and supportive lecturers. Thank you immensely. I am using this medium to offer my sincere congratulations to the newly appointed Chief Justice of ABU SRC-Court, Justices of Supreme Court, Justices...
